July 1, 2010: Recall of Children's Jewelry
June 30,
2010, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commision (CPSC) announced a voluntary recall of children’s jewelry which contains
high levels of potentially dangerous Cadmium. Smilemakers Inc. has recalled about
66,200 children’s Happy Charm Bracelets and 2,200 Football Rings
The metal
substrate in the jewelry contains high levels of cadmium. Cadmium is toxic if
ingested by young children and can cause adverse health effects. No injuries
have been reported
This
recall involves “Happy” charm bracelets and football rings. The “Happy” charm
bracelet is comprised of colorful
beads on a small elastic band to which a metal charm in the shape of a
butterfly, moon or sun is attached. The football ring is a small adjustable
metal band to which a football charm (made of metal) is attached.
These
products were distributed for free at doctor and dentist offices nationwide
from June 2005 through March 2010 for free.
The CPSC reminds that consumers should stop using
recalled products immediately unless otherwise instructed. It is illegal to
resell or attempt to resell a recalled consumer product.
