July 21, 2010: Doctors Groups Say Keep Taking Avanda
On July
15, 2010 an article
in the Los Angeles Times reports that three groups of physicians that treat diabetes
have released statements recommending that patients currently taking Avandia should
keep taking the drug until they speak with their physician to receive
alternative treatments. This statement comes after the decision by a Food and
Drug Administration advisory
committee to allow the drug to remain on the market. The Endocrine Society, the
American Diabetes Assn. and the American Assn. of Clinical Endocrinologists
issued a joint statement saying
that the risk of stopping the drug abruptly is greater than any potential risk of
cardiovascular disease that might be caused by the drug. Doctors warn that
stopping diabtetes medication can cause “significant harm” including both short
and long-term diabetes-related complications.
